AVOID EXCESSIVE SUN EXPOSURE

Sunshine brings exciting things into our lives, such as swimming, sunbathing, outdoor activities and plenty of ice cream! But the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be bad for you. Too much sun exposes you to many dangers including sun burn, skin cancer and sunstroke. Avoid these dangers by keeping cool, staying in the shade and wearing sun protection.

AVOID Harmful Ultra Violet (UV) Rays – EYES AND SKIN

UV-A and UV-B rays affect the skin in different ways. UVA rays are less intense than UVB but are the main contributors to skin cancer. UVB rays are the main cause for sunburn and skin redness. Remember to always wear sunscreen and wear lightweight clothing to cover your body. UV rays can also damage your eyes, so make sure they stay protected with sunglasses and/or a sun hat or cap.

STAY IN THE SHADE BETWEEN 11am – 4pm

Where possible, try and avoid going out in the sun between the hours of 11am and 4pm. This will keep you away from the sun when it is at its strongest. Either stay indoors during this time or stay in the shade, for example under a bus shelter when out travelling around, or use a parasol at the beach.

STAY PROTECTED WHEN THE SUN IS UNAVOIDABLE

One of the easiest ways to stay protected is by using a good sunscreen.

STAY HYDRATED AND COOL

Your body’s heat and hydration levels yo-yo during the summer months. Make sure you are topped up on water or hydrating foods such as fruits to keep your body functioning properly. Keeping your body temperature cool when the weather is hot is also very important. Too much heat can cause dizziness and fainting. Keep yourself in a cool place and wear appropriate clothing to cool yourself down, use fans or air conditioning so that you do not overheat when at home or in the car. Lastly a nice soothing after-sun lotion like Posthelios will feel heavenly on your skin after a day at the beach; try leaving it in the fridge for that extra cooling effect!
